TranzAlpine: A STEM-learning journey with a view(external link)
The TranzAlpine traverses through one of the most scenic, but uncompromising landscapes in our country. It winds its way through Te Tiritiri-o-te-moana the Southern Alps, along 223kms of track, through 15 tunnels, and over four viaducts. One of the tunnels is 8.5kms long and one of the viaducts is 72 metres high.
Trains and have played a big part in shaping the Aotearoa we know today. To move big loads, a train needs a big engine. Check out this 3300 horsepower DX locomotive!
Climb aboard a DX locomotive and get a view of the cab from the perspective of a locomotive engineer.
The TranzAlpine is regarded as one of the greatest train journeys in the world! It traverses te Tiritiri-o-te-Moana, the Southern Alps.
Many students from Paroa School in Māwhera Greymouth cross the railway every day on their way to and from school, and they have some important rail safety messages to share.
