Waikato expressway

Waikato Expressway construction montage. The Waikato Expressway is a big highway project. We’ve pulled together some stories and videos about the people working on the Cambridge section of the expressway.

Overall, the expressway will provide a four-lane highway from the Bombay Hills to south of Cambridge. It will be part of State Highway 1, New Zealand’s main road which runs the length of the country.

The Waikato Expressway will:

  • be safer
  • reduce travel times
  • make travel times more reliable.

People and goods will get to their destination faster, there will be fewer delays and serious crashes will be greatly reduced. Travel time from Auckland to Tirau will be 35 minutes less. There will be less traffic in towns like Huntly, Ngaruawahia and Cambridge.

Traffic in each direction will be kept apart by a median strip of land and safety features such as wire rope barriers. Local roads will be reached by on and off-ramps connected to bridges or underpasses.

The Expressway may be finished by 2020. There’s a lot of work to get done, with engineers, machinery operators, trades people, planners, safety experts and scientists all involved.
