Movin’March – Māehe Haere

|

Wellington region schools can sign up now. This month-long event celebrates the benefits of walking, scooting and biking to school.

School children take part in Movin'March.

Movin'March 2019 is a month-long celebration supported by councils and schools across the Wellington region. It’s all about encouraging primary school children and their whānau to walk, bike or scoot to school.

Schools who register before 14 December will go in the draw to win one of two $100 Prezzy cards.

Every year, participation numbers grow. Schools tell Greater Wellington Regional Council that taking part is a great way to kick start good habits for the year ahead.

In 2018 nearly 25,000 students took part with 65% of schools noticing more students walked or “wheeled” to school.  Schools can do as little or as much as they like and the regional council provides heaps of resources, competitions and incentives for students, teachers and parents.

Movin'March is embraced by schools because it…

  • gets children moving as a normal part of their day not something they have to find separate time for
  • helps alleviate chaos at the gate
  • enables families who live ‘too far away’ to take part
  • fosters independence in older children and invigorates learners for the school day
  • gives parents an opportunity to spend time walking and talking with their children and connects them to their neighbourhood and school.
