Resources support primary and early childhood teachers to help young children with two very important areas of road safety.
Young children can soon sing along to fun songs and watch educational videos about staying safe near roads and vehicles.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is publishing the new resources in time for Road Safety Week 2025, which runs 12-18 May.
Two topics are covered:
The resources are aimed at children aged 4-7 in early childhood education centres and primary schools. Included are two videos starring the animated character Tiaki, and two waiata with key safety messages delivered in memorable ways. Teacher support material is included.
Educators from Tātai Aho Rau Core Education have carefully designed the resources to support the active learning styles of young tamariki.
You’ll find the new resources here on the Education Portal early in Term 2.
Road Safety Week is a nationwide event coordinated by the charity Brake New Zealand, with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi as a key sponsor. Heaps of schools and ECE centres take part each year – often with a special day when students or road patrollers dress up as superheroes.
A webinar is coming up – join Caroline Perry, director of Brake the road safety charity, and Dawn Pollard, senior education advisor at NZTA.
Time: 3.30pm on Thursday 27th March 2025.
What: Caroline and Dawn will preview new resources and unpack ideas that help you build on Road Safety Week throughout the year. Give young people a progression of learning experiences to embed road safe dispositions in their daily lives.
