In this statistics unit, students use the Problem, Plan, Data, Analysis and Conclusion (PPDAC) enquiry cycle to carry out a comparative investigation of stopping distances under different conditions.

Lesson plans and student workbook guide teachers and students through the steps of the statistical enquiry cycle.

Students will develop their own understanding of the importance of following distances which suit driving conditions.

Crossing the Centre Line is a unit of work that is based on a series of trigonometry investigations aimed at Year 10 students. The context is set around driver distractions or micro-sleeps (or zoning out) when driving. Students carry out investigations looking at the effect factors such as differing speeds or distraction times have on the distance travelled towards the centre line if the car starts to veer towards the right at a small angle.

Discussion starters, background information, lesson plans, worksheets and ICT resources are all provided along with a unit description to assist teachers in implementing this unit of work in the classroom. A student self-assessment is included to help students reflect on their learning and as a way for them to improve the quality of their investigations.

As all of the resources as editable, teachers can adapt them to suit the needs of their class or individuals within the class.

Achievement Standard 1.10 (91035 v2) Investigate a given multivariate data set using the statistical enquiry cycle.

Students use the PPDAC statistical enquiry cycle to investigate the impact of cell phone use and tiredness on concentration while driving. A multivariate data set is provided in Excel and CSV formats. Three PowerPoint presentations for classroom use give examples of the sort of questions, analysis and conclusions expected by the achievement standard.
