Curriculum

Resources for schools and teachers to plan programmes of teaching and learning aligned to the New Zealand Curriculum in particular the vision, values, principles, key competencies, effective pedagogies, and learning areas.

Vision
As a result of learning using these road safety resources children will be knowledgeable and confident about all forms of transportation. They will be actively involved in making journeys around their community safer.
Values
By using these road safety resources all students will be encouraged to value:
  • inquiry and curiosity, by thinking critically, creatively, and reflectively about safer journeys while respecting a diversity of opinions and behaviours.
  • participating responsibly in personal and collective action for safer journeys by respectfully holding themselves and others accountable for the good of the community and their environment.
Principles
Through road safety education all students are included in making and implementing personal and collective decisions that develop an environment for safer journeys in their community.
Key competencies
Through adopting effective pedagogies in these road safety resources students will develop a broad range of knowledge, skills and attitudes to:
  • apply creative and critical thinking to make decisions and shape actions for safer journeys;
  • use language, symbols, and texts (in particular ICT) to describe information gained and influence others to endorse decisions and carry out actions for safer journeys;
  • manage themselves resourcefully and resiliently when establishing goals and implementing actions for safer journeys;
  • interact effectively with a diversity of people to come up with new approaches, ways of thinking and actions for safer journeys;
  • be part of and contribute to their community where all members experience safer journeys.
As a result of demonstrating these competencies students contribute to creating a safe system of safe roads, safe speeds, safe vehicles and safe road use.
Effective Pedagogy
  • Student's learning within these road safety resources is based on:
  • Encouraging reflective thought and action;
  • Enhancing the relevance of new learning;
  • Facilitating shared learning;
  • Making connections to prior learning and experience; and
  • Providing sufficient opportunities to learn.
Student's learning is enhanced through using:
  • the SOLO taxonomy
  • an action learning process based on inquiring questions. For examples of this process see Inquiry Roundabout
