Safety around trucks is focus for curriculum resources

Keeping safe around trucks is a new curriculum resource for New Zealand primary and secondary schools.

Trucks are a common feature on our roads. They’re also big and heavy – and testing the implications of this in the classroom can now add context to science concepts like mass and velocity.

Science is one of four learning areas covered by a new set of curriculum resources.

Title: Keeping Safe Around Trucks

Learning areas:

  • Science
  • Mathematics with Statistics
  • Social Studies
  • Health and PE

NZ Curriculum: Level 1-4 achievement objectives

The resources can be freely downloaded from the NZ Transport Agency Education Portal and modified by teachers to meet student needs.

Activities are arranged to help students identify prior knowledge, bring in ideas, connect ideas and extend ideas.

It is suitable for students in primary school, middle years and early secondary school.

NZ Transport Agency Freight Strategy Manager Marinus La Rooij says trucks provide a critical service to the New Zealand economy, moving goods to market.

“But while trucks have an important function, those of us not in trucks need to be more aware of some of the safety risks of being around trucks on the road and how to keep ourselves safe,” he says.

“Around two thirds of crashes involving trucks and another vehicle are caused by a mistake by someone not in the truck. So there is a big opportunity to give people a better idea of what the safety risks are and how to keep themselves safe around trucks.”

The agency has developed the resources in conjunction with the Road Transport Forum, which is the national body representing the commercial road freight industry.

Important understandings about safety around trucks include:

  • While you can see the truck – the truck driver may not see you
  • While you think you might have time to get across the road – the truck is actually travelling faster than you think.
  • Trucks are much bigger and heavier than cars, so give them extra space on the road.
